Fishing Report 08/07/19

Fishing has been outstanding and so has the weather!

Our combo trips have started to get into full swing with a nice balance of Striped Bass, Bluefish, Sea Bass and Porgies to bend the rods throughout the entire day. Also a few Fluke and cusk in the mix from the all day trips. These trips will only get better and better all the way into late October. If you haven’t booked your charter with us yet, read the Bonus Season info below.

BONUS SEASON FOR PARTY & CHARTER BOATS ONLY! Starting Sept 1st the angler limits for Black Sea Bass and Scup (Porgies) increases. (This bonus season is only for vessels that take passengers for hire such as us or the bigger party boats). Sept 1- Dec 31 Black Sea Bass increases to 7 fish per angler. Sept 1-Oct 31 Porgies (Scup) increases to 50 fish per angler. Sept and October are the months to cash in and fill your freezer.

Bluefish are most definitely in! We have seen some enormous “gorilla” blues. Real tackle busters up to 18 lbs. A lot of people don’t realize that when treated properly, bluefish can be excellent table fare. We bleed them for you and get them on ice as soon as possible. They do not freeze well so only keep what you will eat in the next few days. Unless of course you plan on smoking them.

Striped bass fishing is also still very good. The night bite has not been good the past few weeks but that will change soon! Every day is different. Some days it is mostly bigger fish, other days it is all schoolies. We got the striper below in late July that went 43lbs on a half day afternoon charter.

Petrel Charters Waterford, Ct

Chub Mackerel are making a strong appearance this past week! First time in years that we have been able to target these locally. Although we do not specifically target them, we have managed to get a few to bite this week and they are a lot of fine on light tackle!

False Albacore/Green Bonito: Word is that to our east there are some Green Bonita showing up. False Albacore wont be very far behind! Expect to see them appear in the next couple of weeks. If you would like to do a light tackle charter for these species give us a call. We have the gear to do some light tackle spin casting.

EXTENDED INSHORE (7 HOUR TRIP) is the best shot at filling your freezer during September and October. We will be doing open boat trips weekly in September and October for porgies and sea bass as well.

LIGHT TACKLE BASS/BLUES/ALBACORE/BONITO trips are available as a 1/2 day option in September and October.

If you haven’t booked your charter yet, there is still plenty of time to get out there and fish! We still have a few dates available in August and we fish right into Mid November. The Fall is such a great time to go!

Keep em tight! – Capt Greg Bernier
